I’ve got the D40, and my daughter has the D50.
Get a D40, as it’s Nikon’s smallest and lightest DSLR, and has all the features you’re likely to need, and then some. The D40 (and X) are the only Nikon DSLRs (right now, anyway) that can mount and use ALMOST ALL F mount manual focus lenses made since 1959! Of course, they won’t autofocus or meter with the old glass, but you can still take great pictures with fast lenses, at much less cost than buying new autofocus glass (and metering by eye is easy).
The other Nikon DSLR bodies (D80, D200) can also use SOME old lenses, but only those made since about ‘77 (still quite a few).
I think the D40 is a great deal, but you can’t go wrong with any Nikon DSLR that’s currently being made. Still, if you can get a killer deal on a clean D50, grab it… It’s also a very good camera!
Not likely…maybe 10%…Digital SLRs keep their value pretty well…Just bought a Canon 30D for 1600, and the lowest I have seen it for is around 1500.00. And 20Ds are selling for about 80% of what people bought them for 3 years ago. Look at it like this…It is a good investment…

I am a Nikon person, but at entry level I prefer that Canon, better megapixels and it is really a great camera.
I have a Nikon D50, and i want a new camera, so will all the lenses i have for it work with the new Nikon cameras???
Here’s a partial cut and paste from another question I answered before.
All the lenses you currently have will work and autofocus with the D80, D200, D300, D2 and D3 series.
Any Nikon S series lens from the D50 will autofocus with the D40. But others will need to be manually focused.
Here’s a list of current lenses that autofocus with the D40 and D40x, with more coming out soon from all lens makers.
