The new Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras looks pretty good. I like the focal range of the zoom, but the specs don’t indicate if there is a macro setting for close-up shots of spiders, flowers, the hearts of attorneys.
What is a "VR" lens?
I am one of those happy 18-200 VR users. Man, this is a wonderful lens and I would highly recommend it as a worthwhile upgrade. Okay, there is SOME distortion at the edges at extreme focal lengths, but it’s very good for the money. If I am going to be extra critical, I use a 17-55 Nikon lens, but this is quite a step up from the kit lens.
I also use the 60 mm macro mentioned in another answer and you just couldn’t ask for a better lens. Okay, the 105 VR macro might be nicer, but this is an amazing piece of glass.
I have taken a few very crisp close-ups with that 18-200 VR lens, even though it is not supposed to have macro capabilities. Here is a dragonfly taken from about 3 feet away at (probably) 200 mm using the VR setting. ("VR" means "Vibration Reduction," by the way.) It’s too bad he’s sitting on a CLOTHESLINE instead of a bush, but I think you’ll agree it’s a suitably sharp image – almost macro. http://members.aol.com/swf08302/dragonfly.jpg
I have a Nikon D50 SLR digital camera with the 18-55mm lens kit. I just purchased the 52mm Sunpak Circular Polarizer to attach to my lens… I put it on but CANNOT get it off! I put it on nice and straight – the threads were even and all… but it has that outer ring that holds the actual glass that rotates and rotates, but does not tighten or loosen. The ring that have the threads is SO TINY that I cannot even get a grip enough to budge it! I put in on just to make sure it fit… and didn’t take the time to clean the lenses previously. I’m now stuck with a polarizer I can’t get off and a dirty lens I can’t clean. HELP ME!! Is there some special way to do it, or a tool I need? I’m lost and VERY UPSET and FRUSTRATED!
well a polarizer does have the ring that spins, thats the polarizing ring that you can turn to illiminate the reflrections in water or a store window. The ring that spins is mounted to the smaller ring with the threads that screws into your lens.
Maybe try a small piece of tape, so you can hold the two rings together, so the top ring wont spin. You might need soemone with a little bit more manual dexterity, or try a tiny tiny drop of vaseline. Other than that, you might have to take it to a camera store so you dont end up damaging the lens. You might have accidentally crossed the threads.
Dont worry. Its just a camera( albeit a NICE one), and this polarizer will be off of the lens at some point in the future right?? Its not stuck for good. Unless you are a photogrpaher who is losing money each minute the polarizer is one the lens, really, you might be getting tooooo frustrated
Photograpy and video capturing are the two common interests of almost every man. Everyone may not be professionally adept in using or operating such devices, but most of them do prefer to give a try or look out for such gadgets which are easy to use and produce excellent picture quality. Earlier we had the famous SLR or Laica cameras that were cumbersome and heavy. They were both difficult to carry as well as difficult to use. In fact, it had almost everything manual starting from setting shutter speed, Aperture, Depth of field etc. Compared to them, the latest cameras are much more user- friendly and portable. Other than just being sleek and attractive in looks, these gadgets also allow general people to try their hands on photography. What makes you feel more excited is that, these cameras are now available at economical prices. If you visit any shopping website, you would find a vast list of cheap digital cameras with impressive discount rates and excellent offers.
These digitally enhanced gadgets have multiple options to enhance picture quality. In fact, the old SLR cameras have now been updated with digitally enhanced options which leave a wide option to improve your creativity as well as user-friendliness. A very good example is the Nikon D700 which has got accolades for its amazing picture quality and noise reduction options for better clarity. It has launched a new f/2.8, 24-70 mm lens that produces amazing photo realistic effects. For example, the fading back ground of any picture. Other than this, it has an amazing high resolution LCD screen, a dust removal filter along with fabulous auto focus facility which also provides 3D light effects. One of the main reason for the popularity of this Camera is its sleek and smart shape which clearly gives a feel of superior attitude. The body is strong and solid with scientifically analysed ergonomics and operational clarity. What makes this gadget outstanding is its price range which is comparatively cheaper in comparison to the number of other options that it has and the picture quality. Most of the cheap digital cameras have become a craze among people for their long list of features and easy operational facility. The most stunning fact is it can also support operations in Win 98, Millennium, 2000 as well as XP. Other than this, it also supports MAC PCs.
These Cheap Digital cameras have become a craze among youngsters and adolescents because of their economical prices. Most youngsters depend solely on their limited pocket money and hence cannot afford to buy expensive stuffs. These gadgets are best suited for them as they are available at economical rates and have multiple high end options. Other than the latest SLR’s, these cameras also have high end features which have attracted professional as well as non professional photographers. For example, the Premier digital camera provides excellent picture output with the help of 3.2 Mega Pixels CMOS Sensor. Other than this, it has high image resolutions with a Fixed Focus Lens that functions in the range of 0.4m~0.6m. This camera has a classy exterior with high resolution TFT display, which would be obviously admirable for both youngsters as well as the adults.

I want a really good camera, or one that takes fairly good pictures. Im looking into the Nikon D50 but im a little skeptical here, http://www.shopping.com/xPC-Nikon_D50_Digital_SLR_with_28_90mm_F_3_3_5_6_Lens , now the price is extremely cheap so im not sure if its a rip off. Anyone know? Or a good camera that isn’t so expensive?
SCAM!
That link is only there to be counted by the advertiser for payment from the sellers of a BOOK, and DOES NOT lead to a D50 camera, but some crap book about cameras. The link’s only there to make you click on it!
SCAM!
Aside from that rant, yes, the D50 is a good camera. If I could buy them for the $30 or so advertised by that scam link, I’d take two hundred of them!
Nobody likes to be limited by a budget, especially penny-pinchers like me. But hey, that’s a story for a later discussion. Let’s stick to talking exclusively about digital cameras here, and more importantly Nikon digital SLR cameras. It’s no secret, that Nikon creates many of the best digital SLRs out there, and there are plenty to choose from.
For such a discussion, we’re staying away from beginner entry level SLR models, and focusing on those cameras that allure to individuals with more photography skill, or simply a bigger budget that compensates for a lack of skill. I do not really fit into either of these categories at the moment, but hey, things are changing.
Lets start by dealing delving into the Nikon D90. A camera which just beats the $1,000 entry barrier, but comes amongst a generous 12.3 megapixels. Now I know you may have read other discussions in the past about how megapixels truly don’t matter, but that runs best for consumers who don’t own many cameras. The D90 comes with other nice appealing features like dust control, updated live view (all you purists out there just need to get over it), and outstanding detection abilities
For the more advanced photographer (not the same as the guy with the larger wallet), you will need to look at the D200. If your seeking out speed from a camera, this baby’s got it. By speed, I’m talking about a fast and versatile shutter speed, and the ability to take rapid fire pictures one right after the other. It’s been available for a while, since 2005, which explains why it’s at only 10 megapixels, but it is also a testament to how good a camera it really is. To still be a viable model, nearly four years after the initial launch.

I am trying to figure out the right camera for my wife and me. My parents are starting to ask what I want for my birthday and Christmas and I was trying to put together a wish list. I thought I would put a digital SLR on the wish list. Here is what I am looking for:
A dSLR that will take care of me while I am a beginner on up to if I ever start wanting to get serious about taking pictures.
A camera that isn’t going to bust the bank account.
Camera that professionals would suggest as the "better" entry level to mid level camera.
I also want to figure out the right lens to get. I know that there are a lot of lenses that come with cameras that once you get another "good" lens, you will never want to use again because the other "better" lens takes so much better pictures. I don’t want to necessarily get a packaged lens unless it is something that I will love to use when compared to other lenses.
So I am up for your suggestions. Here is what I have looked at so far: Nikon D50 D70 and D80s, Canon Digital Rebel XT, Rebel XS, Rebel XTi, and Rebel XSi. I have also looked at the Pentax K200D but am not sure of the company.
Thanks friends.
If money is the primary issue go with the D40 it will give you great photos and give you more bang for the buck than any entry DSLR out today. Do not let the lower megapixels concern you if you do not do very very large prints you will never notice the lower DSLR. If you have a bit more money the D60 give you a number of things you want. It has newer firmware and image processors, designed for the 10 mp sensor. It has an "Active Dust Reduction System with Airflow Control ". Nikon not putting a system on the D40 to deal with dust is one of the biggest drawbacks I see to the D40 ( though I think its still a great camera for the money) If you change lenses dust will get in and the camera needs a system to deal with it. With the D60 you get a VR lens. That will help with low light situations ( they may offer that now with the D40 but originally it was not) . The D60 has Adaptive Dynamic Range. Nikon calls it "Active D-Lighting," it lets you save some highlights that my otherwise be lost. It has a newer better metering system than the D40.

Some people will want to make a big issue out of the fact that there are some Nikon Lenses that will not autofocus on these cameras. Right now there are "only" about 39 lenses that autofocus on these cameras. They cover the range of focal lengths. I doubt any photographer would be seriously limited with "only" this many lenses to choose from. If you want to manually focus you can more than double this and do so at a low cost. Manual focusing is easy and how we did things for decades before the advent of autofocus.
Cannon and Nikon chose to put the vibration reduction in the lens rather than the body. Yes that means you get it only on lenses with that feature built in. In the body in theory it would work on every lens. But in fact image stbilization in the lens has proved to work faster and smoother with a lower impact on focus times than image stabilization in the body
I found it interesting that one of the comments here said "never buy a camera that runs on AA. ever." because while I agree that the other batteries can give you superior performance under most condiotns. I just bought the MB-d10 multi battery pack for my D300 spending 300 us on it and one of the main motivations was that in a real pinch I could use AA batteries which I could get anywhere
In closing all the major manyfactures make good cameras. With Nikon and Canon having the largest market share. Most photographers are loyal to what they use and like. Go to the stores get them in your hand and find what you like. What fits your hand well, which has the features you want in an easy to use format
